ARBOR'S REACH/BLOOMING TREE
~Plants~
Spear Flower
partly edible
The Spear flower looks like a normal flower on the outside, with thin-ended black petals and white stripes coming from the center, but what really makes it stand out is the behavior when the lower petals are touched. The flower will quickly throw a sticky ball of a yellowish substance with a stick on the back, where seeds hang on. The yellow substance is edible and has a bitter taste, but is known for improving attention and focus, as well as energy. It also shouldn't take too much of someone's diet, as it has bad effects in large amounts.
Rain Tree
edible
The rain tree is a plant that, despite not being that tall, has a really thick trunk: so big that a Vivian could comfortably live inside if it was hollow. The leaves make a dense roof close to the tree that easily accumulates water, which makes the space around the tree always wet with their dripping. From these trees, red fruits grow. They have a good size and taste bittersweet, but are one of the best source of nutrients on the island.
~Animals~
Ivory Rotcoil The Ivory Rotcoil is, despite its threatening name and dangerous appearance, a relatively tame creature. Easily, when tempted with sweet things and a nest, it can be convinced to live harmoniously with a Vivian. Its body is wrapped from the waist down in tight green vine that beings to blend into its flesh at the midway point of the body, and which has trumpeting black flowers with bright white stamen growing out of it. As the vine reaches the tail end of the body, it becomes clear that the vehicle has hollowed and the body is no longer separate from the vine at all, and it browns and trails with its never-wilting flowers dragging alongside it. This skin is not shed throughout life, and the length of the body appears to signify how long the Rotcoil has lived -- if it has almost no brown or any buds rather than flowers, it's a juvenile, and the shorter the body, the closer the Rotcoil is to the end of its lifespan (about 3 years). The off-white surface of the main body is not as clearly scaled as one would expect it to be, with patchy scales around areas like the forehead, cheeks, and back of neck giving way to more sensitive underbelly-like areas with an almost skin-like texture to them in places like the front of the neck. Though the Rotcoil is not venomous, its bite will cause some nasty puncture wounds. Those teeth aren't just for show, you know. It has excellent night vision, and can emit a variety of scents to show its mood through emitters near its cheeks. In the wild, it generally lives in the hollows of dead trees if solitary and in burrows in the ground if raising a family. SIZE COMPARISON: |
Red Death Despite having a name that invokes fear, the Red Death does not have this name for being dangerous. Instead, it is becase of the terrible smell it carries around, usually described as a slightly off smell of rotten meat. From an overhead view, this creature looks like a big, red flower with an atrocious smell, but the flower is actually a covering an eight legged creature. Said creature will partially bury itself and wait for scavenging animals to get close before moving to snap its fangs on the victim. They have a poison that is not a threat for adult Vivians, causing only a pain on the area since they are too big, but it is wise to warn the young about this creature and its flower. These creatures are known for being able to wait for days, usually changing the hunting territory after sometime. It can be tamed if you feed one of them, but the behavior when tamed is not very well studied since most don't want to live in this creature's company. They live for around 2 years. Lumin Squirl If you see one lumin squirl, there are bound to be many more. Lumin squirls are highly social creatures living in the canopy of trees. They are creatures of the dark, sleeping during the day and searching for food and mingling by night. One can easily identify a lumin squirl from the glowing antennae atop of their heads and within their bushy tails. They're used as a form of communication and as a way for males to show off to potential mates as the bulbs flicker on and off. If there are many within one tree it can make for a pretty light show.
