The sun sat at its highest point in the sky, pouring down wave after wave of blistering heat. It had done so every day that season, and most of last, though, so it wasn’t unusual to the inhabitants of Vive now. Most had learned to bear the weight, and burn, of the heatwave, while others decided to stick to shadier lands so that they didn’t have to. Whatever they chose, all that mattered was that they had overcome the challenge. They’d beaten the game, again.
But there was always another level, and Zom considered his return to be the start of that.
At first, it would be difficult to discern the flaming mass from the rest of the sun, since it fell through Vive’s atmosphere perfectly aligned with the huge star. However, the closer it got to the ground, the larger the flames around the god grew. Before too long, it was impossible not to notice the fireball that streaked through the sky, unless you were underground.
Zom relished the feeling of the flames as they grew hotter and hotter. When he had started falling, his usually coal-grey scales had looked akin to a rock from space. By the time he was within sight of the inhabitants of Vive though, the flames were hot enough to turn his scales into a brilliant shade of light blue. He shimmered like a star caught ablaze, which was what he’d hoped for, of course. However, it was as difficult to achieve as a safe landing was. Even for someone as powerful as him, turning into a living ball of fire had its consequences.
Chance alone sent the enormous fireball, and the god within it, to crash land on the least populated place on Vive. The snow-laden island north of Crest Coast.
Even if a creature missed Zom’s blazing entrance, they would have felt the ground shudder from the impact of his fall. It was even more impossible to escape than his entrance, since it rippled out from the island to every corner of Vive.
He wanted every single living creature on the planet to be aware of his return. And he wanted them to seek him out. Zom had no doubt that Kuu and Eme would have already checked in on their creations by now, and made their own impressions on them when they did.
Now, it was his turn to do so.
