[ continued from kids in the dark ]
it'd been a while, hadn't it?
frowning, the bright purple feather pushed the clump of grasses and berries around before bending down to pick at it. for days since they'd met the other feather, they'd camped together in a makeshift shelter, gathering food and helping each other build. the stump was finished, as was the lookout rocks. stocks of herbs, grasses and berries lay in a dent in the wall; vines and leaves were draped over a branch that blocked the entrance. even a trail of tiny pebbles showed the path to where the grasses were sweetest and most plentiful.
akemi knew exactly how many days it'd been - twenty-two, from the time they first set foot outside the hollow. which left them with nineteen or twenty sunrises from the top of the lookout rocks. they always watched the sunrises, and the sunsets, marvelling as the milky orange-yellow orb dipped down under a shallow hill. it was a ritual of some sort, taking up only a few minutes every day, but a ritual nonetheless.
they finished up their berries and stood, looking around. liva was nearby, at the stream - probably getting a meal for herself, or looking for new material to use. hm. it'd been a helpful pairing, then - to stay alive. but now akemi was fully grown, the kinks in their legs straightened out and the dent in their beak no longer a disability. yes, they'd grown so much since they sprouted. and they were itching to know how well they'd survive on their own, without anyone to support them - as it should be. already they planned to leave, to be well on their way to some other adventure.
that would come in due time. for now they enjoyed the swirly orange sky as the sun began to drip down into the hills.
