- KAITO -
tags; none
it was cold. so cold.
kaito could only say it was his fault. after leaving the hollow, he'd followed several other podborns for a little while, tagging along as they travelled through the grassy plains. but before long they split ways - kaito was all too eager to explore, always wandering off to look at a new flower or to check out a different path. it hadn't been too much of a surprise to discover he'd been left behind. he hardly minded - he had so much to do, after all. there were always new creatures to find and new places to explore. he'd wandered under the canopy of the tree for a few days, napping in the shade of the thick trees that dotted the area. at one point, he got into a scuffle with an odd white creature, escaping with a few scratches and nips. it seemed he'd grown, too. he stood slightly taller than he thought he had when he first set out into the plains. and he could pronounce almost every word that came to his mind, although he did stumble sometimes.
naturally, he'd assumed that this was all there was, that the spread branches of the blooming tree were all there was in the world. he was wrong.
and that was how kaito found himself standing in the middle of who-knows-where, surrounded by sheets of ice that stretched beyond what he could see. snowflakes bit at his legs and stung his face, forming tiny dewdrops of ice that clung to his feathers. behind him, the sanctuary of the blooming tree was tiny and blurred. how far had he come? yet, the landscape showed no signs of changing.
at first, there'd been some comfort in talking to himself. however, the orange feather had long run out of things to say, falling instead into a somber silence. there was droopy, dark grass that grew in patches and wasn't horrible to eat, and sometimes he could slip into a pack of huddling mirkeet to rest. still, he found his only company his heart in his chest and the clouds of his breath as he slid on the ice.
his thoughts wandered to lethal. that green fur, with the rusty red muzzle, the one he'd met in the hollow. maybe he shouldn't have left so soon, kaito thought - he definitely wouldn't have if he knew that leaving would lead him here. regretfully, the feather slowed, turning to look back at the tree.
no. going back would mean giving up. he was sure there was something worth travelling for out here. positive. a glimmer of hope swelled in his chest. he would find it! he had to.
so kaito gathered himself up and carried on, first at a walk, then quickening his pace as much as he felt he could. he didn't know where he was running to, but he didn't look back.
